FAKTURA IS A SERIES OF 15 UNIQUE WORKS THAT EXPLORES PAINTING AS A SEARCH FOR THE DIVINE NOT THROUGH REPRESENTATION, BUT THROUGH THE MATERIAL LANGUAGE OF THE MEDIUM ITSELF. IN THIS BODY OF WORK, COLOR AND TEXTURE ARE NOT IN SERVICE OF A NARRATIVE OR AN IMAGE. THEY ARE AUTONOMOUS. THEY ARE THE PAINTING.
THE TERM FAKTURA, ROOTED IN EARLY 20TH-CENTURY AVANT-GARDE THEORY, CHALLENGES THE TRADITIONAL FUNCTION OF PAINTING AS A VEHICLE FOR DEPICTING THE EXTERNAL WORLD. HISTORICALLY, REPRESENTATION OF PEOPLE, OBJECTS, OR SCENES HAS DOMINATED THE CANVAS, OFTEN SUBORDINATING THE FORMAL ELEMENTS OF PAINTING: COLOR, TEXTURE, BRUSHWORK. THE SUBJECT BECOMES CENTRAL, WHILE THE MATERIAL PRESENCE OF THE WORK RECEDES.
THIS SERIES REVERSES THAT HIERARCHY. HERE, THE MATERIAL ASPECTS OF PAINTING ARE FOREGROUNDED. FAKTURA IS NOT ABOUT WHAT IS SEEN, BUT WHAT IS FELT THROUGH SURFACE, PIGMENT, AND PRESENCE. BY ELIMINATING THE SUBJECT, THE WORK SEEKS TO RECOVER A MORE ESSENTIAL, SPIRITUAL RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE VIEWER AND THE PAINTING ONE THAT SPEAKS IN THE RAW, TACTILE LANGUAGE OF MATTER ITSELF.
